‘Tell you what it is, Mr. Reid. Now we’re four misfits who don’t belong together, we’re playing for the other misfits. They’re the outcasts, right at the back of the room. We’re pretty sure they don’t belong either. We belong to them.’ /Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody/
What is the movie about?
The movie captures the years of the iconic band, Queen, focusing mostly on the lead singer’s Freddie Mercury’s life. The band members, who are Freddie (played by Rami Malek), Brian May (played by Gwilym Lee), Roger Taylor (played by Ben Hardy) and John Deacon Joseph Mazzello) decide to follow their own ways in music and never let others tell them what to do. Of course the band has its own ups and downs but no matter what, they find the way back to each other, because they are a family. The movie ends with the most famous Live Aid Concert. I didn’t write spoiler alert to this section because the story of Queen already happened, there are no surprises in the story.
Queen songs appearing the movie are:
“Somebody To Love” (A Day at the Races)
“Keep Yourself Alive” (Queen)
“Seven Seas of Rhye” (Queen II)
“Killer Queen” (Sheer Heart Attack
“Fat Bottomed Girls” (Jazz)
“Bohemian Rhapsody” (A Night at the Opera)
“Now I’m Here” (Sheer Heart Attack)
“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (The Game)
“Love Of My Life” (A Night at the Opera)
“We Will Rock You” (News of the World)
“Another One Bites The Dust” (The Game)
“I Want To Break Free” (The Works)
“Under Pressure” (Hot Space)
“Who Wants To Live Forever” (A Kind of Magic)
“Radio Ga-Ga” (The Works)
“Hammer To Fall” (The Works)
“We Are The Champions” (News of the World)
“Don’t Stop Me Now” (Jazz)
“The Show Must Go On” (Innuendo)
What did I like about the movie?
The movie is basically an ode to the band I love the most so I was super excited after watching the trailer for the first time. Critics said the film raises a lot of important but doesn’t answers any of them. My opinion about this is that this kind of movie shouldn’t express an opinion about things, it just have to salute artists.
Rami Malek is simply amazing! He imitates the moves, walk and mimics of Freddie. The makers of the movie took time to find similar looking people for the other characters as well.
And of course, the songs… the last, Live Aid scene feel like being right there is thwe crowd.
To whom would I recommend it for?
To anyone who likes Queen or music history in general.
And to those who like to see for what Rami Malek get an Oscar for.
The movie was produced by the band’s former manager, Jim Beach who has his own character in the movie.
The role of Freddie Mercury was first cast to Borat actor, Sacha Baron Cohen.
The final lead actor, Rami Malek had to wear prosthetic teeth to make sure he looked exactly like Freddie Mercury.
