Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

‘These creatures were here before us, and if we’re not careful, they’re going to be here after. Life cannot be contained. Life breaks free. Life finds a way.’ /Ian Malcolm/

What is this movie about?
The island where the dinosaurs are permanently kept becomes endangered because a volcanic eruption is about to happen. A discussion about the dinos life evolves between the government and the scientists. Claire Dearing (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) wants to find her ex-boyfriend, Owen Grady (played by Chris Pratt), because he is the only one who can find Blue, the Velociraptor.

What kind of question does the movie raise?
Is it OK for people to interfere in genetics?
What should you do when your discovery proves to be dangerous?
Are you responsible for creations?
Who decides what happens to creatures?
Can we really teach dangerous animals not to hurt us?
Is really sorry the hardest word to say in a relationship?

What did I like about this movie?
First of all this Jurassic World movie brings all the standards you are used to such as mindblowing visionary, jokes, stereotypical but loveable characters and dinosaurs! I liked the fact that I wasn’t sure what is going to happen to them even at the very last seconds of that ominous scene. I also liked that it made me think about genetics, technology and what is wrong and right for us te do these days in general.

Best Star Wars outfits

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away fashion was actually more important than you think. If you read the title and immediately thought about Princess Leia in the golden bikini, I have to disappoint you, because that is not that kind of blog post. Here I listed all those visionary costumes that made an impact on fashion later on.

But first let’s be thankful for John Mollo, Trisha Biggar and Michael Kaplan, the brilliant visionaries behind these artwork. (I may not mentioned all of the designers because I only found their names so far.)

To avoid copyright problems, I’m just going to link in the official Star Wars Instagram photos.

First of all, let’s take a look at Amidala (Nathalie Portman), who looks like a medieval princess. And the buns are the true reminder of the iconic Leia hairstyle.

Amidala’s wedding dress with lace and pearls we can simply call artwork. (Nathalie Portman)

Who said a hero can’t be pretty? Princess and warrior at the same time (Carrie Fisher).

Admiral Holdo’s (Laura Dern) dress is simply magnificent with that cape. And the turtleneck makes it even more special. #superherovibes

And the newer version of the dress. Slim fitted and still comfortable enough to shoot droids while running in it. (Nathalie Portman)

I absolutely loved Emilia Clarke’s outfits in Solo movie. The picture doesn’t show much of the dress, but it’s black, long with a V neckline and a statement necklace and a matching belt. It would come through on the red carpet as well.

Leather is the new white in Solo. (Emilia Clarke)

And last but not least, Amidala’s ruler dress has some Aisan features and the colour red expresses power. (Nahtalie Portman)

Solo: A Star Wars Story

‘Let me give you some advice. Assume everyone will betray you. And you will never be disappointed.’ /Beckett in Solo/

What is this movie about?
Han (played by Alden Ehrenrecih), a theif at Corellia tries to find his way out of the enslaving power with his love, Qi’ra (played by Emilia Clarke). To achieve that he has to collect coaxium, the ‘superfuel’. When they almost escape, Qi’ra gets caught. Han joins the Imperial Flight Academy but gets expelled so he joins tobias Beckett (played by Woodie Harrelson) and his pack of thieves. His goal all through is to find and rescue Qi’ra.

What did I like about this movie?
It was great to finally see how Han and Chewbacca first met and became best friends, how he won the Millenium Falcon and what was his personality like before he got his macho attitude that we all know so well.
I also liked Paul Bettany, who playes the bad guy in the movie (and Vision in Avengers) and Emilia Clarke (The Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones), the first love of Han.
So all in all it was a hoot and a half for nerdie people.

To whom would I recommend this movie?
To all the Star Wars fans of course, but even to those, who want to have a fun time watching a sci-fi movie.
I recommend you to watch in 3D, because the scenery is spectacular.

Game of Thrones meets Star Wars
Emilia Clarke (a.k.a. Khaleesi, the Mother of Dragons) plays Qi’ra, Han’s love in the movie. Although she is not the only GoT character who got into this franchise as well! Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) is also Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens. Obara (Keisha Castle-Hudges) and Nymeria Sand (Jessica Henwick) appeared in Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens. Even Jojen Reed (Thomes Brodie-Sangster) gets his one minute of fame as a soldier.

Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Scarlett Letter

Recently I’ve been having a classic vibe, so these are the kind of books that are coming.

Who was Nathaniel Hawthorne?
The American writer lived from 1804 to 1864. He wrote his first novel when he was only 28 years old! His art is considered to be a part of dark romanticisim and the location of most of his novels is New England, where The Scarlet Letter takes place as well. One of his ancestors was a judge in the Salem witch trials and most of his works is about the sin. The Scarlet Letter is considered his masterpiece and it was published in 1850.

What is the Scarlet Letter about?
It’s about a woman, Hester Prynne who has to face trials because she had a love affair with a man who is not her husband. She has to wear a scarlet letter A on her chest as a sign of her sin and she is living an isolated life with her illegitimate daughter, Pearl. She works very hard as a seamstress and often helps the unfortunate. Her husband turns up from a long journey and asks her not to reveal his identity. As time goes by, her lover gets unmasked and the whole town has to face the truth.

What kind of question does the book raise?
Can we call someone a sinner when we are sinners as well?
Is it better to come forward with your sin or hide it for years?
Who is a true friend and who isn’t?
Do we have to care about what other people think?
Is it possible to live happily when society rejects you?

Why did I like this book?
I always liked historical novels and this one gives us a very detailed description about the 19th century’s puritan American society and religious beliefs. Although the book is 167 years old it still makes very accurate points about the hypocrisy of people. I also liked how the story unfolded and when it began to dawn on me who Hester’s lover was, I has another interesting character to pay attention to. Even though it is a sad story the whole novel has a very peaceful sentiment.

What kind of movies did the book inspire?
There are two film adaptations of the novel. The earlier one is from 1995 and the main actors are Demi Moore and Gary Oldman.

The latter one is from 2015.

But it also inspired a romantic comedy with Emma Stone and Penn Badgley.

Avengers: Infinity War

‘All my life I dreamed of a day, a moment, when you got what you deserved. And I was always so disappointed. But now, you kill and torture and you call it mercy. The universe has judged you. You asked it for a prize and it told you no. You failed. And do you wanna know why? Because you love nothing. No one.’ /Gamora in Infinity War/

The new Avengers movie came out in April and of course I had to see it! The movie has set many records already because its estimated costs make it the most expensive movie ever made in history. But don’t you feel sorry about the producers, because it became the highest grossing superhero film of all time.

What happens in the movie?
Thanos, the Titan decides to collect all of the Infinity Stones so he can rule the universe and make a new order that he thinks would be better. The Avengers team up with Guardians of the Galaxy to save the day.

Who appears in the movie?
With all these characters we can call this film a superhero Woodstock.
Iron Man /Robert Downey Jr./
Thor /Chris Hemsworth/
Hulk /Mark Ruffalo/
Captain America /Chris Evans/
Black Widow /Scarlett Johansson/
Doctor Strange /Benedict Cumberbatch/
Vision /Paul Bettany/
Scarlet Witch /Elisabeth Olsen/
Black Panther /Chadwick Boseman/
Spider-Man /Tom Holland/
Falcon /Anthony Mackie/
Winter Soldier /Sebastian Stan/
War Machine /Don Cheadle/
Star-Lord /Chris Pratt/
Gamora /Zoe Saldana/
Rocket /Bradley Cooper/
Groot /Vin Diesel/

And now ladies and gentlemen SPOILER ALERT!!

Why I liked this movie?
First of all, I am a huge fan of the Marvel superhero movies and it feels nice when the characters you like from different films get to meet each other. 🙂
Then because there is constant tension through the film.
And finally because it is not predictable. I think it’s the first (or second, if we count Logan) Marvel movie that doesn’t end with a happy ending.

But what about that ending?
I’m trying to tell you my thoughts without spoilering anything for those who haven’t seen the movie yet. But just to make sure, don’t read further! Sooo… I think they will all come back. Think about what Doctor Strange said after his visions. He only saw one option for a positive ending and then he told Ironman he couldn’t do anything else. So I think he gave the stone to Thanos because of that. And what about the ‘end end’? Well, can’t wait to meet Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

I, Tonya

‘There’s no such thing as truth. It’s bullshit. Everyone has their own truth, and life just does whatever the fuck it wants.’ /Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding at the end of the movie)

What is this movie about?
This biographical movie captures the life of American figure skater, Tonya Harding (played by Margot Robbie) whose life was full of abuse relationships. First with her mother (played by Allison Janney) than with his first husband (played by Sebastian Stan).

Who is Tonya Harding?
She was born in 1970 in Portland and began figure skating at the age of 4. She became famous in 1991 when she became the first American woman to perform the triple axel in a competition. Her career took a sad turn when she was associated with the attack of Nancy Kerrigan in 1994 and was banned from skating. After that she worked as a professional boxer. She currently lives with her third husband and her son.

And how Margot Robbie performed this choreography in the movie:

Awards:
Academy Award winner 2018: Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
/Allison Janney/
Academy Award nomination 2018: Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
/Margot Robbie/
Best Achievement in Film Editing
/Tatiana S. Riegel/
Golden Globe winner 2018: Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
/Allison Janney/
Golden Globe nomination 2018: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
/Margot Robbie/

What did I like about this movie?
First of all I always enjoy films that are based on real events. We civilians imagine figure skaters (and ballet dancers as well) to live like princesses, but the truth is their life is full of hard work and suffering. Training thousands of hours while their friends and classmates are living their normal teenage life. The movie also shows the fragility of professional sportsmen’s lives, because an injury can destroy the work of long years. These people start training at a very young age and have not time to learn a ‘proper’ profession so if they don’t achieve something remarkable in their active years, it’s very hard for them to stand on their own feet later. I also found Margot Robbie’s and Allison Janney’s performances truly remarkable.

Favourites of April 2018

Book experience of the month:
I was very curious about Margaret Atwood’s The handmaid’s tale, so I started the month by reading that. It turned out to be less disturbing than the series, but I’ll get to that later. Even though the book sets place in the dystopian America, it poses painfully real questions the current situation of women.
When I was in Budapest, I bought a Poket book called Dairy of a madwoman by Géza Csáth. Although I like the novel, I think it can be very hard to read and understand for people who has never learned psychiatry before.

Audiobook experience of the month:
I got to the 6th Harry Potter book, the Half blood prince, and I know it means that this series will soon end… So I try to enjoy the story as much as I can. I still can’t forgive Ron for fooling around with Lavender Brown. Seriously, what was he thinking?!

Movie experience of the month:
I want to catch up with the Oscar movies, so I watched Three billboards outside Ebbing. Previously I thought this will be a very sad movie, but I was positively disappointed. The movie focuses on the characters, they have enough time to develop until the end and all together gives a great opportunity for the actors in it. I really liked the performance of Woody Harrelson.
Then I moved on to The shape of water and I liked that movie even better. This one became the best movie of 2017 and it won three more Academy awards: for directing, best music and best production design. Very impressive, isn’t it? The story takes place in the 1960’s and is about two extraordinary lovers. Extraordinary, because Sally Hawkins plays a deaf cleaning lady who falls in love with a creature from the sea.
Last but not least I finally got to see last year’s fashion movie, Phantom thread. It is a very interesting story about a dressmaker (Daniel Day-Lewis) who meets a woman, Alma, who becomes his muse. But is it enough for Alma as well? Can she become a real partner to the artist?

Series experience of the month:
After reading the book, I started watching The handmaid’s tale by Hulu as well. I have to tell you, it’s more shocking than the book and it has many changes as well. For example, Luke doesn’t survive in the book and Ofglen kills herself. I’m very excited to see Alexis Bledel in such a role, amazed by Elisabeth Moss and I can’t wait for the second season!

Travelling experience of the month:
I went to Budapest this month to see the Daalarna Fashion Show and it was the best fashion experience ever! Find out more about it here.
